About 2 weeks ago, I blogged about my interest in Japanese Manga and Anime art and our online community, here. My blog post was automatically posted to twitter and facebook. That piqued some interest from ex Anindo members who are following my tweets and/or in my facebook friends list. They then told their friends who in turn tell their friends about the blog post. The ex-Founder suggested that we created a tribute to Anindo. So I did. I re-activated Anindo.net and uploaded all the impromanga files and some artworks Anindo produced in its heyday. At this stage it was still for nostalgic reason only. Apparently, I am not the only one who got all nostalgic about it. There was a mass communications going back and forth on facebook between a few ex-members. Then one ex-member decided to create an Anindo Reunited facebook group. It’s purpose was to gather all members on facebook. Within 2 days of group setup, we gathered 40 ex-members on facebook. Then, all missing administrators from every corner of the world are found. Everyone was excited. Everyone was missing Anindo. Everyone wants Anindo revived. So we decided.. it must be fate. 7 years after it was dissolved because life happened, ANINDO is back… FULL FORCE. So, ex-members, if you read this post… or if you know an ex-member or two.. direct them to Anindo (Reunion) website. We’ll start or resume our Impromanga, share artworks and life tips, produce anthology and many more. Anindo is very dear to me. This community played a big role in my early career life, partly responsible for shaping where I am today. So, here is my latest pet project for the community;- a fully social-media integrated community wordpress website. The website was set up only 3-days ago. We are still very young (yet old enough to make a comeback). We have achieved so much in a short time, but there’s still quite a bit to do. So take it easy, ex-members only for now, while the administrators are sorting out the backroom.

When I was younger… much younger.. I used to to draw Japanese manga/anime style. Japanese comic took Indonesia by the storm starting from around late 80s. There are thousands of aspiring comic artists, illustrators and animators in Indonesia. They (we) are all young, foolish, eager and full of dreams. Above: A sketch for a Dragon Ball Fanfiction We draw and draw… I remember that I used to produce 2 full artworks (penciled, inked, coloured) every day for years. I used to have 20+ penpals to exchange letters and drawings everyday from all corners of Indonesia. At home, I still have drawers and drawers of comic books, artbooks, and stacks of letters and sketchbooks, with ideas scribbled all over the pages. Above: A character from one of my Comic ideas In 1992, the Internet (or the web) started to boom. These young dreamers (myself included) started to use the web to look for inspirations – information, manga/anime arts, and communities (forum and chatrooms). Some were even bold enough to learn how to create websites and publish their artworks. In 1998, I moved to Australia. I met more friends in Australia who had the same hobby. Thank God for the Internet, I also met similar dreamers from far-reaching corners of the world. Most of them were Indonesian students studying overseas. Some were from other countries. We found Anindo.net in 1999 (at least that’s the earliest file I have for that community). Anindo, shorts for “Anime Indo (International)” was a community of aspiring Indonesian anime (style) artist (mostly students) from all over the world. We utilised CommunityZero as our online home. Then in 1999, when CommunityZero started to charge their members, we, starving students that we were, had to move. The founder and administrators collected/volunteered some fund, created a website and forum to rehouse us. We had hundreds of active members, forum posts, member images, impromanga, galleries and contests. Above: Anindo.net, Web Archives 2004 snapshot Above: Anindo.net, Web Archives 2004 snapshot Then we all grew up. Life happened and we had to be responsible. While a small number of us has enough passion to continue drawing and follow the ‘artist path’, most stopped. We stopped drawing, stopped dreaming, stopped making comics, stopped making animations and movies. I noticed that the majority of us ended up with a career in IT and Design related. Others ended up being a lawyer, doctors and even housewives . Web archives have snapshot of Anindo.net until about 2005. I think that’s about right… when everyone got busy with life… movde on and the website got dissolved. I still hold the domain name. Oh.. during their most active years, Anindo also published an Art Anthology – consisting of member’s best works. Above: Anindo.net (Punch) Anthology landing page Nowadays, with the advent of social media, we met old friends. I notice that the one question that most of my old friends would ask me when our path crossed again is… “Do you still draw (Japanese) comic?” Gee.. I must have...

In about 12 days, it will be my 12th year in Australia. 12 Years ago, I was so into drawing anime-style. So, when I moved, my first priority is to make sure that I have enough drawing supplies to last me until my next holiday home (i.e. I brought with me humongous amount of stationaries). Alas, shortly after my move, I realised that I love computer more than drawing (i.e. I am addicted to undo button). Hence, 3 years after my move, I prefer to design a website to conceptualising an artwork, use tablet to draw instead of pencil my sketches colour using photoshop than dipping my brushes to watercolour or airbrush my artwork (to date, I still have my airbrush propellant 3/4 full. The only times it gets to be used is when my bunny spray and clean the inside of his computer). choose large flat screen monitor than paper types coding instead of drawing I grew out of my addiction for anime not long after I quit drawing. I still admire the culture, read manga, collect cute stuff and watch animes every now and then and scribble but I am no longer obsessively keeping myself up-to-date with the trend. Anyway, this means, I am now a proud owner of stationaries that will probably last me until I die (if my usage pattern is like the past 9 years). These stationaries are not all I have. I have: pencils of with leads of different thickness and softness leads refills (of automatic pencil) of different thickness and softness erasers (top brands), Japan made drawing brushes (black ink/calligraphy) colouring brushes (water colour) colour inks, watercolors, colour pens, etc airbush colour pens (e.g copic) correction pens of different sizes clips, cutters, pins, staples, etc novelty anime pencils, pens, erasers, pencil case, etc (i.e. Yu Yu Hakusho, Dragon Ball, CLAMP, etc) An assortment of drawing paper of different thickness, patterns and paper surface Apart from the novelty items, all stationaries are of high quality and some are very expensive. I was not a professional. It was a hobby and I was not as good or talented as some of my now artist friends. But I realised from the early age, high quality equipment (and best supplies) help a lot. They are easier to use (so you can just concentrate on practicing) and sometimes help camouflage your flaws. Mind you, these supplies are from 12 years ago. Some of them you can no longer found in the shop (they are now considered vintage ). Sometimes they made better stuff too in the olden days. If I don’t start using them, I will probably give it to my (future) kids to use. They will be the best equipped at school. Though my bunny said that “Using your parents’ stationaries would not be considered cool.” Damn! They will want the latest iPhone, iPad, netbooks, blackberrys, etc, instead.

Jackie Chan is Chun Li This is ridiculously funny. I found this tonight and feeling so nostalgic. This is an old Jackie Chan’s movie called City Hunter. It’s based on Japanese Manga of the same title. City Hunter is also one of my favourite manga when I was much younger. Actually, if I can buy a complete set of City Hunter manga, I would do it. This scene is not canon, though. It is not originally in any City Hunter Manga. The scene is actually a spin-off of Street Fighter, a very popular Japanese arcade game. I still remember my brothers spending a lot of coins playing this movie at our local arcade centre. Anyway, enjoy
