When I was younger… much younger.. I used to to draw Japanese manga/anime style. Japanese comic took Indonesia by the storm starting from around late 80s. There are thousands of aspiring comic artists, illustrators and animators in Indonesia. They (we) are all young, foolish, eager and full of dreams. Above: A sketch for a Dragon Ball Fanfiction We draw and draw… I remember that I used to produce 2 full artworks (penciled, inked, coloured) every day for years. I used to have 20+ penpals to exchange letters and drawings everyday from all corners of Indonesia. At home, I still have drawers and drawers of comic books, artbooks, and stacks of letters and sketchbooks, with ideas scribbled all over the pages. Above: A character from one of my Comic ideas In 1992, the Internet (or the web) started to boom. These young dreamers (myself included) started to use the web to look for inspirations – information, manga/anime arts, and communities (forum and chatrooms). Some were even bold enough to learn how to create websites and publish their artworks. In 1998, I moved to Australia. I met more friends in Australia who had the same hobby. Thank God for the Internet, I also met similar dreamers from far-reaching corners of the world. Most of them were Indonesian students studying overseas. Some were from other countries. We found Anindo.net in 1999 (at least that’s the earliest file I have for that community). Anindo, shorts for “Anime Indo (International)” was a community of aspiring Indonesian anime (style) artist (mostly students) from all over the world. We utilised CommunityZero as our online home. Then in 1999, when CommunityZero started to charge their members, we, starving students that we were, had to move. The founder and administrators collected/volunteered some fund, created a website and forum to rehouse us. We had hundreds of active members, forum posts, member images, impromanga, galleries and contests. Above: Anindo.net, Web Archives 2004 snapshot Above: Anindo.net, Web Archives 2004 snapshot Then we all grew up. Life happened and we had to be responsible. While a small number of us has enough passion to continue drawing and follow the ‘artist path’, most stopped. We stopped drawing, stopped dreaming, stopped making comics, stopped making animations and movies. I noticed that the majority of us ended up with a career in IT and Design related. Others ended up being a lawyer, doctors and even housewives . Web archives have snapshot of Anindo.net until about 2005. I think that’s about right… when everyone got busy with life… movde on and the website got dissolved. I still hold the domain name. Oh.. during their most active years, Anindo also published an Art Anthology – consisting of member’s best works. Above: Anindo.net (Punch) Anthology landing page Nowadays, with the advent of social media, we met old friends. I notice that the one question that most of my old friends would ask me when our path crossed again is… “Do you still draw (Japanese) comic?” Gee.. I must have...
