I haven’t blogged for a while, so I thought I’d post this to let you know what I’ve been up to. It has been a strange time at work.. for the past few months I have been a graphic designer for print materials and also digital ofcourse, a copywriter/marketing extraordinaire, a web analyst/programmer, a database person, and the latest.. …that person who can make our logo run. The good thing of being a Multimedia person (even though officially, I am supposed to be a User Experience Analyst developer) is I get to do a wide variety of work. So it’s never boring (at least not for a prolonged period of time). It’s been a long time since I do timeline and graphic based stuff in Flash. I have always been making interactive assets using Action Script (that programming thing that comes with Adobe Flash). My WIP.. (yes, it’s a picture of a pig dragging a pink suitcase as my desktop wallpaper) I am supposed to make a little stick figure (stickman) runs and incorporate it to a cloud-based security application.. yea, I know… some of you will go.. Huh?!? Well, as long as it makes sense to me, and fun. Sorry, it’s blurred to protect what may come out from my company soon. Although it’s pretty pointless since you can find out who I work for from my linkedIn.

About 2 weeks ago, I blogged about my interest in Japanese Manga and Anime art and our online community, here. My blog post was automatically posted to twitter and facebook. That piqued some interest from ex Anindo members who are following my tweets and/or in my facebook friends list. They then told their friends who in turn tell their friends about the blog post. The ex-Founder suggested that we created a tribute to Anindo. So I did. I re-activated Anindo.net and uploaded all the impromanga files and some artworks Anindo produced in its heyday. At this stage it was still for nostalgic reason only. Apparently, I am not the only one who got all nostalgic about it. There was a mass communications going back and forth on facebook between a few ex-members. Then one ex-member decided to create an Anindo Reunited facebook group. It’s purpose was to gather all members on facebook. Within 2 days of group setup, we gathered 40 ex-members on facebook. Then, all missing administrators from every corner of the world are found. Everyone was excited. Everyone was missing Anindo. Everyone wants Anindo revived. So we decided.. it must be fate. 7 years after it was dissolved because life happened, ANINDO is back… FULL FORCE. So, ex-members, if you read this post… or if you know an ex-member or two.. direct them to Anindo (Reunion) website. We’ll start or resume our Impromanga, share artworks and life tips, produce anthology and many more. Anindo is very dear to me. This community played a big role in my early career life, partly responsible for shaping where I am today. So, here is my latest pet project for the community;- a fully social-media integrated community wordpress website. The website was set up only 3-days ago. We are still very young (yet old enough to make a comeback). We have achieved so much in a short time, but there’s still quite a bit to do. So take it easy, ex-members only for now, while the administrators are sorting out the backroom.

When I was younger… much younger.. I used to to draw Japanese manga/anime style. Japanese comic took Indonesia by the storm starting from around late 80s. There are thousands of aspiring comic artists, illustrators and animators in Indonesia. They (we) are all young, foolish, eager and full of dreams. Above: A sketch for a Dragon Ball Fanfiction We draw and draw… I remember that I used to produce 2 full artworks (penciled, inked, coloured) every day for years. I used to have 20+ penpals to exchange letters and drawings everyday from all corners of Indonesia. At home, I still have drawers and drawers of comic books, artbooks, and stacks of letters and sketchbooks, with ideas scribbled all over the pages. Above: A character from one of my Comic ideas In 1992, the Internet (or the web) started to boom. These young dreamers (myself included) started to use the web to look for inspirations – information, manga/anime arts, and communities (forum and chatrooms). Some were even bold enough to learn how to create websites and publish their artworks. In 1998, I moved to Australia. I met more friends in Australia who had the same hobby. Thank God for the Internet, I also met similar dreamers from far-reaching corners of the world. Most of them were Indonesian students studying overseas. Some were from other countries. We found Anindo.net in 1999 (at least that’s the earliest file I have for that community). Anindo, shorts for “Anime Indo (International)” was a community of aspiring Indonesian anime (style) artist (mostly students) from all over the world. We utilised CommunityZero as our online home. Then in 1999, when CommunityZero started to charge their members, we, starving students that we were, had to move. The founder and administrators collected/volunteered some fund, created a website and forum to rehouse us. We had hundreds of active members, forum posts, member images, impromanga, galleries and contests. Above: Anindo.net, Web Archives 2004 snapshot Above: Anindo.net, Web Archives 2004 snapshot Then we all grew up. Life happened and we had to be responsible. While a small number of us has enough passion to continue drawing and follow the ‘artist path’, most stopped. We stopped drawing, stopped dreaming, stopped making comics, stopped making animations and movies. I noticed that the majority of us ended up with a career in IT and Design related. Others ended up being a lawyer, doctors and even housewives . Web archives have snapshot of Anindo.net until about 2005. I think that’s about right… when everyone got busy with life… movde on and the website got dissolved. I still hold the domain name. Oh.. during their most active years, Anindo also published an Art Anthology – consisting of member’s best works. Above: Anindo.net (Punch) Anthology landing page Nowadays, with the advent of social media, we met old friends. I notice that the one question that most of my old friends would ask me when our path crossed again is… “Do you still draw (Japanese) comic?” Gee.. I must have...

This post is a quick follow-up to my previous post. I have received a number of queries about what you can do while freelancing online. Note: What’s classified as freelancing online is work that’s done purely online! This means all communications, work and delivery is done remotely (via email, instant messenger, video conference, web downloads, sometimes telephone, etc). You never get to see your client face-to-face. So, here’s what’s currently popular as freelancing works: 1. Design Not inclusive of programming – usually you just provide psd files. Website design (static, cms based, flash, html5) Mini website design (one-page promo website, pop-up, sales webpage, etc) Newsletter design UI/UX design (for applications) Graphic design (business card, brochures, corporate stationaries, posters, etc) – always a bonus if you know print and prepress process if you work on this space. 2. Programming In the online freelance space, the most common applications are: PSD to HTML/CSS/JS PSD to CMS templates PSD to WordPress (HOT! HOT! HOT!) or Joomla or drupal template WordPress, Joomla, Drupal template customisation or new plugins (in PHP) Other web applications (in PHP & mySQL – e.g. contact forms, customer registration, invoicing systems, eNewsletter, etc.) Twitter applications eCommerce websites iPhone applications (objective C or web based) (HOT! HOT! HOT!) Facebook applications (HOT! HOT! HOT!) Interaction design (JQuery and Flash applications (AS3 or AS2)) Other application programming can be done remotely as well (i.e. using JAVA, C, C++, .NET, etc) but not as popular as what’s mentioned above. I think because we’re working on webspace, web-based applications is so much more on demand. I have also seen an increasing number of mobile applications and social media integration projects. So, this is where you should update your skill. Note: I notice that you tend to get more work if you can do BOTH design and programming (e.g. design and develop the website or design and develop the wordpress template). What people don’t realise is, it’s hard to find a good designer who is an equally good developer. So, consider collaborating with other freelancer if either one of these skills is not your forte. 3. Writing Blogging (HOT! HOT! HOT!) Copywriting (writing marketing copy for websites, brochure, etc) Content writing (provide ghost writing services for ebooks, news site, eZines, content specific websites, or any websites really) Offline Ghostwriting (writing for books, newspaper articles, etc) Editing and Proofreading (mainly online material) Translation services (English to any languages and vice versa). 4. Webmastering Optimise websites (Search Engine Optimisation/increase ranking on search engine results, increase google page rank, increase traffic, etc) Managing and updating websites Ghost-blogging (Running blogs that are not yours) End-to-end services (design, develop, write, optimise, manage). 6. Illustration and Digital editing IMO, on the web, unless you’re a good digital artist.. (people commission for your artwork because they admire you) the hot skills right now is VECTOR. Be it vector icon, vector background, vector illustration, etc. Vector Illustration (Adobe illustrator, Flash objects, etc) Image Editing/Manipulation Icon development Game illustration any other digital artwork (anime style, fantasy illustration, concept art, etc) to be put on...

Ok, being a geek, a person of Chinese descent (hence the love for money and good deals), lazy, and naturally a greedy person, I met the stereotypes of people who should have been easily sucked into the hopeless world of shortcut to riches. Luckily I have a wonderful group of friends and family who would rescue me or knock some sense into my head before I sink to the deepest pit of any get-rich-quick scheme. Perhaps these were also the reason why I once joined Amway many years ago and wasted a lot of money. I did learn a very important lesson though – sales. But that’s for another story. Anyway, I have attempted making money online through a couple of ways. Some works.. some don’t. Mind you, when I started, the Internet was not mature enough. (Geezz… I spoke like a wizened user of the Internet). Internet connection was still very expensive. So it wasn’t as easy as nowadays. I am going to list the top 5 ways to earn money online that I have done before. This method will be ranked by profitability (Profit $$ = revenue – cost). Your cost will be both time and money cost. The prerequisites to any of the following method is: Good Internet Connection (as low cost as possible, free would be ideal – you may steal your neighbour’s wireless connection or you can work at an Internet Cafe while doing this). A computer to access the internet.. DOH! Willingness to learn and embrace the concept (ability to withstand any insult or objection from your non-geek friends who claim they live in real world). None of the method I am listing is a get rich scheme. They require EFFORT!! If it’s too good to be true, it probably is not true. Note: Do not attempt to do any of these during working hours – unless you want to get fired. The easiest way is no. 1. Anyone can do it. Number 2 – 5 requires some webmastering skill. 1. Selling DIGITAL PRODUCT on EBAY I have found that if I have a good resalable digital product, I am always able to move them on eBay. In the past I have sold: eBooks Templates (HTML, Flash, etc) Web Scripts (PHP, JavaScript, etc) Domain names Websites eBay works on the concept that sales is a number game. Your product has very high visibility. Even when you are selling an absolute garbage, you may still make a sale. However, if your product is unique, useful and properly targetted, your conversion rate is higher. My highest selling products are web packages. I scoured the internet for resalable templates, web scripts and eBooks, sort them out (lots of crap out there), repackage and sell them as downloadable package for $10 or $15 as CD/DVD. I also made sure that I wrote a compelling sales copy and provide good photos to entice ebay users to buy my package. In the past, with minimum effort, I used to move...
