So, I went to Perth last weekend. The last time I flew there was almost 2 years ago. I’ve caught a lot of domestic flights (Virgin and Qantas) on the East Coast, but not coast to coast. I took Virgin from Canberra to Perth via Sydney. On the way back, I took Qantas direct flight from Perth to Canberra. Anyway.. Virgin, budget carrier, no expectation, but.. I was surprised when they fed us on the way to Sydney. Apparently flights between 4pm-7pm, to and from Canberra, Melbourne and Sydney are considered capital connect and that means we got complimentary beverages and snack. I haven’t taken these flights before as I usually took morning or lunch-time flights. I don’t usually drink alcohol so can’t comment on the wine but the snack we got was cheese crackers. It’s not one of those cheaply packed cheese and water crackers you can get from supermarket. It is actually very nice, very high quality gourmet cheddar cheese with some nice crackers too. The plane was delayed by one hour in Sydney, so my transit time was increased from 2 to 3 hours. Considering, I was recently delayed by 10 hours by Air Pacific/Qantas code share to Fiji in December, this is no biggie. The real surprise was when I board the flights to Perth. Virgin must have just refreshed their fleets. The Airbus A330 has brand-new leather seats, almost empty flights (so we can sprawl across 4 seats in the middle, if we want) and free movies. I also loved the disney-quality animated safety video Virgin has. This is the first time I actually watched safety video from start to finish. I haven’t done this since I was a child. The guy in that video looked like that dude from the Tangled movie. Here’s the video.. On the way back, Qantas use smaller plane. There’s no delay. The flight was also almost empty. There’s no free in-flight entertainment on-board… which is annoying for long flights. However the staff were quite attentive, and food and drinks were served on regular interval.

Finally… here’s the hawaii trip post that I promised on twitter over and over again. It’s very late. The trip was completed by mid August 2011. I am already in the middle of planning my next overseas trip. Flights Me and my bunny are very prone to impromptu holiday. One day in April we saw Jetstar having sale to Hawaii, so we bought a return trip for two, Sydney-Honolulu for less than $1500. Bargain! I took sleeping pills (2) on each trip and slept for the better part of our 10 hours journey on our departing and returning flights. Honolulu International airport actually reminded me of Jakarta airport while Honolulu itself remind me of Batam Island. Accommodation WARNING! Hawaii Accommodation can be quite expensive. When you make your booking, check that the price is inclusive of all tax, surcharge or resort fee that might apply. We stayed at Pacific Beach hotel. We bought the ocean-view room online thinking that we got a good deal (about $120-150/night). After tax, resort tax, etc.. it ended up costing us almost $200/night. Darn it!! I wouldn’t even pay that for 5* hotel in Australia (unless work is paying). We could probably have stayed at a better hotel.. like Trump Tower maybe (doubt it) or any other beach-front hotel. Pacific Beach Hotel is not too bad though.. it’s in great location and across the road from ‘swim-able’ area of Waikiki beach. The room is clean and the amenities is fantastic. The hotel is catered for a lot of Japanese tourist, but that’s not a bad thing. It is almost like an underlining guarantee that they’ll have excellent facility and everyone there are extra polite. Tips: We also found out that in Hawaii, you are only obliged to pay for the nights you’ve stayed in the hotel. So, even if you book for 7 days, if after the first night, you’ve decided that you don’t like the place, you can move to other hotel. We didn’t move hotel because, albeit the ‘exorbitant’ price for that level of hotel, it is very convenient. Food To be honest, I was quite disappointed with my culinary experience in Hawaii. It is not spectacular, the taste is very average and the variety is quite limited. The quantity is impressive though and they are good quality (clean, fresh seafood, tender meat, etc). I suspect it will be the same as the rest of America. I am not a food critic, but I am proud to say that I have eaten in variety of places, from marketplace, hawkers, your average restaurant, fine dining and luxury gourmet places, sampling food from different nations. While in Hawaii, we ate fast food (McDonald), at Luau, food court, chinatown, resort buffets, bars/diners, pubs, family restaurant and fine dining. Honolulu is swarmed by American food (think steak and burger) and the majority of Asian restaurant serves Japanese food. It’s not like in Australia where you see food from many different countries. I also love Japanese food and...

This is prolly the first time I blog about this particular hobby of mine. But, yea I love to cook. However, I am not a master chef and I am not big on making everything from scratch. I agree it will taste better, more authentic and fresher. Maybe one day I will decide to be a cooking nazi.. but these days.. everyone is busy. Unless I am hosting a party, if meal preparation takes more than 30 mins, I’ll opt for take away. I am happy to wait one to two hours maybe three for a meal.. as long as it’s cooking in the oven or simmering on the stove and I can do something else. Still, I take enormous pleasure from making delicious food, eating them and feeding them to my bunny. My secret desire is that I can eat as much as I can without getting fat, diabetic, or high cholesterol. Yes, it’s in my DNA. Dad got high cholesterol, mum is diabetic. So, yea.. thanks to my parents I am in high health risk category from both side of the family. Pat’s cooking tips: (I hate washing up, so this is what I do) My best friend taught me to wash up while you wait (i.e. wash those cutting board while the meal is simmering). I also tend to rinse and reuse the same dish/plate/spoon/knife during meal preparation. I fit as much as possible in one cutting board. Get a dishwasher!!! Better yet, if you’re in South East Asian countries, get a maid. Sorry, a maid is too expensive in Australia – so dishwasher will have to do. So, here’s some of what’s been cooking in my kitchen: As you can see, I need to concentrate more on the food presentation and I am not a good food photographer either. Again, this is just a hobby and I do get a real good kick from making that delicious food. Nomm… nomm.. nommm… See you next time.

Want an easy dip to make? Guaranteed to make your guests short from licking the serving platter raving about it? Serve this Mexican style four-layer dips. All ingredients can be found at your local supermarket. Cheap! Cheap! Perfect saviour for when you’re hosting that dinner and you realise you don’t have enough food for everyone. Fill them up with this dip as entree!! Ingredients: (to serve four adults with appetite of a mammoth). one and a half of medium sized Hass Avocado 1 x 300g Sour Cream (I choose light, because the full cream one makes me sick) 1 x 312g Salsa dips (hot/medium/light) – For this recipe I got the medium organic salsa dip from Aldi. But, you can get homebrand or the usual Old El Paso ones. two or three handful of shredded cheese enought to cover your dips - For this recipe I got the pizza dip from Aldi (combo of light tasty cheese, mozarella) Dorito chips (cheese flavoured one) to scoop – For this recipe, I use Cheese Supreme (red package) doritos. How to make: First layer: Cut the avocado into small pieces then mash them with forks. Second layer: Use forks to mash the sour cream in the container then pour to cover your mashed avocado Third layer: Pour the salsa dips to cover your sour cream Fourth layer: Scatter the cheese over salsa dips layer – I usually leave the middle open. Note: You may have noticed that I missed this step in the instruction photo. I was too busy taking photos of the whole process that I forgot this fourth layer. Had to shuffle chips to the sides and then sprinkle the cheese and put the chips back on T_T). Scatter your doritos over your dipping concoction. Clean up the sides of the platters with napkin or paper towel, then serve. Credit: Recipe’s stolen from Jay, the best mother-in-law (mine!) in the world.

I can’t believe it… 3 years and a bit in Canberra, I’ve only found out about this shop. I’ve driven past the street so many times since I live close by but I never look to the side of the street where the shop is until last week or so. When I mentioned it to an Indonesian friend, she said the shop is owned by a fellow Indonesian. So, I made a quick visit earlier this afternoon to check out their stock and prices. Happy to say it carries quite a number of Indonesian snacks that no other asian groceries stores in Canberra seems to stock. The price is also quite cheaper compare to some other shops in busier area too. Their vegetables seem fresher too (they have fresh vegies on Tuesday and Friday). The shop also has translation of products written in other language into roman-character equivalent underneath the item… funny but definitely useful. The owner straight away identified me as someone coming from Indonesia because I carried a popular brand of Indonesian sweets/snacks, the hottest chilli I can find in the shop and Indonesian sweet bottled jasmine tea (teh botol) to the register… Can’t help it that I am so obvious. I am glad to find it, and I guess I’ll just have to visit often. Here it is… Ah Chu Asian Provisions – Asian Grocery‎ 7/67 Townshend St, PHILLIP ACT 2606 View Larger Map They claim to be the oldest Asian grocery store in Canberra. So.. you Canberra peepz… please pay them a visit!
